eBay Price Results for PCGS Secure Plus™ Coins

PCGS Secure Plus™ is less than six weeks old. Collectors and the numismatic market are in the process of determining what it means, how it operates and the impact it may have. PCGS™ has stated that it is “seeing a steady stream of coins being submitted through the new service” as such RegistryCollector.com has decided to review the data it has been collecting about PCGS Secure Plus™ certified coins posted on eBay.

Over the past few weeks, we have been able to discern 12 unique coin certification numbers posted on eBay by 3 different sellers. At the time of this analysis none of the coins have been sold, although one was still active having met its reserve price with 22 bids. This listing would close within 3 days of this analysis. Most of these items had a reserve price that was not met resulting in a subsequent relisting of the coin. With the only exception being the MS64+ Morgan Dollar that had the 22 bids and was the only item listed as an auction after four (4) failed attempts selling at a fixed price. The other coins were also listed as fixed price and did not sell.

The 12 coins posted are as follows: two (2) Liberty Double Eagle, seven (7) St. Gaudens Double Eagles, one (1) Morgan Silver Dollar, one (1) Peace Silver Dollar and one (1) 1972 Type 1 Eisenhower Dollar.

These Secure Plus coins were listed on eBay at approximately the average price between non plus grades. This suggests that sellers are expecting more than their typical sale price for their non-plus MS64 or MS65 grade equivalents. Comparisons were based on MS64+ to MS64 or MS65 and MS65+ to MS65 or MS66 and MS66+.

RegistryCollector.com believes that this expectation is logical although we are not yet seeing collectors agreeing. This conclusion is based on the lack of sales for Secure Plus coins during this period as compared to their non plus equivalents.

While it may be too early to predict the full affect Secure Plus coins will have on the market, it does appear that initial reactions are they are sparking an immediate buy it now mentality on eBay. RegistryCollector.com will continue to collect data on this segment of the market.
